This box will likely allow users to either proceed directly to third-party sites, such as Expedia or Booking.com or click on individual listings that lead to hotel or airline pages, the people said, speaking on condition of anonymity as the plans are yet to be made public, reported Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-2\">\n<p>Importantly, the most relevant site, as determined by Google\u2019s ranking algorithm, could be featured in the box, while a drop-down menu will offer links to other platforms, including Google\u2019s own comparison tools. In an alternative version of the interface, the company would show a basic list of direct links to shopping or travel providers beneath the main results.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-3\">\n<p>The proposed revamp is Google\u2019s latest attempt to placate EU regulators after the European Commission warned the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/market-stats\/stocks-aditya-birla-sun-life-nifty-it-etf-share-price-nse-bse-e00223\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"tech\" data-vars-link-type=\"Auto\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\">tech<\/a> giant in March that it was at risk of violating the DMA by favouring its own services, such as Google Flights, over those of its competitors. The Commission\u2019s concern stems from longstanding complaints that the firm uses its market dominance to suppress competition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-4\">\n<p>Last year, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/is-google-preparing-to-bring-pixel-call-screening-to-india-after-7-years-know-what-report-suggests-11751021034020.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\">Google<\/a> lost a legal battle over a \u20ac2.4 billion fine levied by the EU for similar behaviour related to its shopping services, a case that has come to symbolise Brussels&#8217; tougher stance on digital monopolies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\">\n<p>The DMA, which took effect in 2024, aims to prevent dominant tech firms from abusing their position. It prohibits companies from giving preferential treatment to their own services and restricts the merging of personal data across platforms. Violations can result in fines of up to 10 per cent of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/market\/market-stats\/stocks-global-education-share-price-nse-bse-s0004765\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"global\" data-vars-link-type=\"Auto\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\">global<\/a> annual revenue, or 20 per cent for repeat offences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\">\n<p>Google has previously attempted to address the EU\u2019s concerns by expanding the number of visible comparison site links within its results for users in the bloc. However, critics argue that the company\u2019s own services still occupy prime positions, often ahead of its competitors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-8\">\n<p>The proposed adjustments come amid a broader <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/companies\/news\/exclusivegoogles-ai-overviews-hit-by-eu-antitrust-complaint-from-independent-publishers-11751629788406.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"crackdown by Brussels\">crackdown by Brussels<\/a> on major US tech firms. Apple was recently fined \u20ac500 million over alleged anti-competitive practices in its App Store, while Meta Platforms was penalised \u20ac200 million for its \u201cconsent-or-pay\u201d approach to advertising on Instagram and Facebook.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\">\n<p>The EU\u2019s assertive regulatory campaign has drawn criticism from the United States. Brian Hughes, spokesperson for the National Security Council, described the fines as a \u201cnovel form of economic extortion,\u201d signalling rising diplomatic tensions during delicate trade negotiations.
