Kaplan of the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey on Friday, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberglaw.com\/public\/desktop\/document\/OfficialCommitteeOfUnsecuredCreditorsvBlockFiIncetalDocketNo323ap\/1?doc_id=X6K00FMSAV49J29H15MEJLV6ML7\" title=\"null\">according<\/a> to court filings.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit, filed in May 2023, sought to transfer over $35 million in crypto assets from BlockFi to the US government. The DOJ said it had warrants to seize the funds from the BlockFi accounts of two Estonian citizens in a criminal fraud case unrelated to BlockFi\u2019s bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the DOJ argued that the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey did not have the jurisdiction to prevent BlockFi from transferring the assets. The dispute arose during BlockFi&#8217;s bankruptcy proceedings.<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>A snippet of the lawsuit. Each party will bear its own legal fees and costs as part of the settlement.<\/p>\n<p>Mohsin Meghji, Plan Administrator for BlockFi\u2019s wind-down estates, represented the crypto firm in the case. The Department of Justice was represented by senior trial counsel Seth B. Shapiro and his team from the Civil Division\u2019s Commercial Litigation Branch.<\/p>\n<p>In May last year, BlockFi announced <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/blockfi-coinbase-fund-distribution-shutdown\" title=\"null\">plans to shut down its web platform<\/a> while partnering with Coinbase to help clients withdraw their remaining funds. Eligible users, including those with BlockFi Interest Accounts, retail loans, and private client accounts, can use Coinbase for withdrawals.<\/p>\n<p>The company <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/blockfi-files-for-bankruptcy-as-many-expected-cites-ftx-collapse-for-its-troubles\" title=\"null\">declared bankruptcy in November 2022<\/a> following the collapse of FTX and subsequently <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/blockfi-emerges-bankruptcy-opens-wallet-withdrawals\" title=\"null\">set a withdrawal deadline<\/a> of April 28, 2024, for customers to reclaim their crypto holdings.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/blockfi-three-arrows-capital-deal-gets-judges-nod-but-remains-sealed\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>BlockFi and 3AC settlement deal gets judge\u2019s go-ahead but remains sealed<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>BlockFi reaches settlement with FTX<\/h2>\n<p>In March last year, BlockFi also <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ftx-alameda-in-principle-settlement-blockfi#:~:text=Bankrupt%20crypto%20firms%20BlockFi%20and,a%20March%206%20court%20filing.\" title=\"null\">reached an $875 million settlement<\/a> with FTX and Alameda Research estates, resolving about $1 billion in claims. CEO Zac Prince testified that FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried\u2019s actions directly caused BlockFi\u2019s bankruptcy.<\/p>\n<p>The bankruptcy court approved BlockFi\u2019s Chapter 11 plan in September 2023 to repay over 10,000 creditors.
