Artificial intellgence (AI) leader OpenAI has rolled out a series of updates to ChatGPT, with a major tweak being made to how the popular chatbot respond to users asking advice on personal problems.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
This comes after instances where it was reported that the tool was fuelling delusions and psychosis in users. For personal problems discussed with the chatbot, the company said the tool should now help you think things through \u2014 weighing pros and cons, and not give you an answer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
The company added these updates are based on feedback and aim to improve \u201creal-world usefulness over the long term, not just whether you liked the answer in the moment\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
OpenAI in a blogpost ackowledged that \u201cAI can feel more responsive and personal than prior technologies<\/a>, especially for vulnerable individuals experiencing mental or emotional distress\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Adding that the changes would allow AI to \u201cbe there when you\u2019re struggling, help you stay in control of your time, and guiding\u2014not deciding\u2014when you face personal challenges\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cHelping you solve personal challenges. When you ask something like \u201cShould I break up with my boyfriend?\u201d ChatGPT<\/a> shouldn\u2019t give you an answer,\u201d a statement from the company said, adding: \u201cIt should help you think it through\u2014asking questions, weighing pros and cons. New behavior for high-stakes personal decisions is rolling out soon.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Besides the personal responses, OpenAI<\/a> has also tweaked how ChatGPT responds to those struggling and \u201crespond with grounded honesty\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n On the issue of use for support when struggling, OpenAI acknowledged instances where ChatGPT’s \u201c4o model fell short in recognising signs of delusion<\/a> or emotional dependency\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe’re continuing to improve our models and are developing tools to better detect signs of mental or emotional distress so ChatGPT can respond appropriately and point people to evidence-based resources when needed,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Further, the chatbot will now also give users gentle reminders and encourage breaks during long sessions.
