Gemini appears set to expand into DeFi with the upcoming launch of a platform dubbed Gemini Onchain, alongside a self-custodial wallet. <\/p>\n

Gemini<\/a>, the U.S. centralized cryptocurrency exchange (CEX) founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, appears poised to expand into decentralized finance with the imminent launch of \u201cGemini Onchain.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a cryptic X post<\/a> on Aug. 5, the exchange urged followers to \u201cbelieve in somETHing,\u201d dropping a link to a website called \u201cHorizon,\u201d the embedded JavaScript of which obscured its true destination until its countdown concludes on Aug. 14.<\/p>\n

Upon inspecting the link, The Defiant found a hidden URL embedded in the page\u2019s JavaScript code, pointing to a website for Gemini Onchain<\/a>, what appears to be a proprietary DeFi platform, as well as a self-custodial wallet product, Gemini Smart Wallet. <\/p>\n

The platform shows a dashboard reminiscent of web3 portals on other centralized exchanges, like Binance and OKX, offering a DeFi protocol aggregator, alongside self-custody wallet, and swap functionalities.<\/p>\n

Per the current design, it appears users will be able to execute token swaps natively, allocate assets into yield-bearing \u201cPrime Vault\u201d and \u201cFrontier Vault\u201d products, and access popular decentralized exchanges (DEXs) and other DeFi protocols like Uniswap, Aave and Curve, as well as web3 domain registries, RWAs<\/a> and third-party analytics platforms \u2014 via redirects to external dApps.<\/p>\n

A hidden link in Horizon website\u2019s code also leads to a job posting<\/a> for a senior software engineer position on Gemini\u2019s Onchain team.<\/p>\n

According to the listing, the team \u201cbuilds Gemini\u2019s onramps to the blockchain \u2018from CSS to ECDSA\u2019\u201d and works on blockchain-based products and supporting platforms, including staking, transfers, and custody. The posting doesn\u2019t provide further details about the broader purpose or scope of Gemini Onchain.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a Senior Software Engineer in the Onchain domain, you will work with talented engineers to enhance and expand the features of our blockchain-based products and the supporting platforms, including the Staking, Transfers, and Custody products,\u201d the job\u2019s description says, without elaborating on what Gemini Onchain is.<\/p>\n

Gemini has neither publicly confirmed the existence or functionality of the Onchain platform, nor issued any public statements regarding its strategic intent to expand its product offerings into DeFi. The Defiant reached out to Gemini for comments, but has not heard back from the team by press time.<\/p>\n

CeFi to DeFi Push<\/h2>\n

The drive to integrate CeFi and DeFi is not unique to Gemini. Coinbase, the largest U.S. CEX by daily volumes, launched a self-custody wallet years ago, which it recently rebranded<\/a> to \u201cBase App,\u201d blending the brand with its Ethereum Layer 2, Base, and adding more on-chain functionality to merge wallet, trading, payments, messaging, and dApps discovery into a single interface.<\/p>\n

Kraken, another top U.S.-based crypto exchange, also launched<\/a> its own L2 network, called Ink, on Optimism\u2019s Superchain in December 2024, and introduced its native INK token in June 2025. The token, now distributed to early users through airdrops, serves as the gas token for on-chain transactions and powers Kraken\u2019s reward program.<\/p>\n

Following Asia’s Lead<\/h2>\n

Outside of the U.S., several of the world’s largest exchanges \u2014\u00a0namely Binance and OKX, whose origins are in Asia \u2014 were first to pioneer the CeFi and DeFi blend, developing their own blockchains, self-custody wallets, and DEX aggregators, presented as a web3 portal from the main CEX brand. <\/p>\n
