Carrone, known as \u201cFede\u2019s intern\u201d on X, said he was released yesterday and that he had been detained over alleged links to a privacy protocol and a January 2022 crypto mixer research paper. <\/p>\n<p>In <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fede_intern\/status\/1954945403146625291\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">an X post<\/a> on Aug. 11, Carrone explained that he landed in Izmir in part to work on a \u201cDeFi project,\u201d but was detained at passport control and told he couldn\u2019t enter the country. Per his reports, local police cited a pending legal case requiring him to appear before a judge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter a few hours, the attorney reached me and explained that the Minister of Internal Affairs had filed a case accusing me of helping others misuse Ethereum, allegedly in connection with a privacy protocol,\u201d Carrone wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>Following his release, Carrone <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/fede_intern\/status\/1955048960684405110\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">said<\/a> that he had decided to donate $500,000 to Roman Storm\u2019s legal defense \u2014 increasing what he said was an earmarked $50,000 from his venture studio LambdaClass \u2014 saying \u201cbuilders everywhere need to know they can push innovation forward and that the community will stand behind them when they do.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Ethereum Foundation <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ethereum\/status\/1953546801614925978\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">said<\/a> that it would match up to $500,000 in further donations to Storm\u2019s defense, posting from its official X account: \u201cPrivacy is normal, and writing code is not a crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Research Paper<\/h2>\n<p>According to the blockchain developer, the incident might be linked to Tutela, a January 2022 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2201.06811\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">academic research<\/a> paper, co-authored by Carrone and eleven other researchers, that examines privacy weaknesses in Ethereum mixers like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/tag\/tornado-cash\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">Tornado Cash<\/a> by showing how users could be deanonymized.<\/p>\n<p>Referencing Tornado Cash developer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/news\/regulation\/tornado-cash-developer-alexey-pertsev-s-detention-prolonged\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">Alexey Pertsev\u2019s detention<\/a> back in November, Carrone stated in his X post: <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few years ago, on the day Alexey was detained, we received a call, that gladly didn\u2019t escalate any further, regarding an academic paper and code we had published about Tornado Cash, called Tutela.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carrone\u2019s post continues: \u201cOur work showed that it was possible to deanonymize users. We never helped anyone engage in illegal activity, it was purely research on mixers and their properties.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Criminalizing Code<\/h2>\n<p>In his explanation of his detention, Carrone criticized the criminalization of open-source privacy tool developers, citing the trial of Tornado Cash co-creator Roman Storm in New York, who was recently <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/news\/regulation\/tornado-cash-verdict-threatens-to-hold-back-defi-where-it-matters-most\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">convicted<\/a> of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business while the jury deadlocked on money laundering and sanctions charges, creating a troubling precedent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWriting code to make transactions private doesn\u2019t make you a criminal,\u201d Carrone wrote on X yesterday, adding:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"bg-theme-forefront mb-4 p-4\">\n<blockquote class=\"font-serif border-l-0 pl-0 text-[15px] font-normal not-italic leading-5 text-muted-foreground\"><p>\u201cCriminals are those who break the law.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>As Carrone explains, he was released thanks to an international effort, including support from friends and colleagues in the UAE, UK, U.S., Europe, Argentina \u2014 and even the Catholic Church \u2014 who he said contacted Turkish officials and helped him get urgent legal help. <\/p>\n<p>Although per his X account he is now back in Europe, the case is evidently still open, and Carrone said he is working with local lawyers to understand the charges and is ready to return to Turkey if needed to clear his name.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe still don\u2019t have the full picture of what happened or why it happened, but we will bring in the best team we can and resolve this,\u201d Carrone wrote on X. <\/p>\n<p>The Defiant reached out to Carrone for further details on the incident, but hasn&#8217;t heard back by press time. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A blockchain privacy researcher known as Fede\u2019s intern said he was detained in Turkey, where he is being accused of \u201chelping others misuse Ethereum.\u201d On Aug. 10, Ethereum privacy researcher Federico Carrone was detained in Izmir, Turkey, and held for about 24 hours, according to his own reports on X.
