{"id":403797,"date":"2025-09-02T11:21:32","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T05:51:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/ef-outlines-l2-interop-layer-to-make-ethereum-feel-like-one-chain-again-crypto-news\/"},"modified":"2025-09-02T11:33:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-02T06:03:01","slug":"ef-outlines-l2-interop-layer-to-make-ethereum-feel-like-one-chain-again-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/ef-outlines-l2-interop-layer-to-make-ethereum-feel-like-one-chain-again-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"EF Outlines L2 Interop Layer to Make Ethereum \u2018Feel Like One Chain Again\u2019 &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new Ethereum Foundation initiative promises trustless transfers across L2 networks.\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is announcing a new effort aimed at making the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/tag\/ethereum\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">Ethereum<\/a> ecosystem feel more like a single chain, without compromising its core cypherpunk principles.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.ethereum.org\/en\/2025\/08\/29\/protocol-update-003\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">blog post<\/a> published on Friday, Aug. 29, the foundation outlined a new initiative called the Ethereum Interoperability Layer (EIL), which will be focused on \u201cmaking Ethereum feel like one chain again,\u201d without compromising on the network\u2019s core values, such as censorship resistance, open source development, privacy and security.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEIL is a trustless cross-L2 interop layer, enabling seamless multichain transactions while keeping the user in control, preserving privacy and Ethereum-level censorship resistance,\u201d the Ethereum Foundation said in the post.<\/p>\n<p>A design document for the new layer, which would allow seamless cross-Layer 2 (L2) transactions, is set to be published publicly in October, the blog post notes.<\/p>\n<p>For context, currently, when a user withdraws from Base, Optimism or any other L2 chain, the funds aren&#8217;t available on Ethereum mainnet right away. There&#8217;s a built-in 3.5-day challenge period to ensure everything is secure, per <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/l2beat.com\/scaling\/projects\/base#withdrawals\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">data<\/a> from L2BEAT.<\/p>\n<h2>Reducing Wait Time<\/h2>\n<p>The EF\u2019s blog post also outlined ongoing research on reducing Ethereum\u2019s finality time \u201cfrom today\u2019s 13-19 minutes to the order of seconds,\u201d and efforts to expand data availability through technologies such as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/news\/blockchains\/dencun-scheduled-for-march-13-as-ethereum-aims-to-onboard-more-core-contributors\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">danksharding<\/a> \u2014 a method to make it cheaper and more efficient for rollups to post data on Ethereum \u2014 though the timeframe for those remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>In early August, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thedefiant.io\/news\/infrastructure\/ethereum-buterin-presses-for-faster-l2-withdrawals-to-curb-bridge-reliance\" target=\"__blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer \">argued on X<\/a> that achieving near-instant withdrawals would require replacing optimistic proof systems, which take multiple days to finalize, with zero-knowledge proof systems.<\/p>\n<p>Buterin particularly proposed a \u201c2-of-3\u201d approach combining ZK proofs, optimistic proofs, and trusted execution environments to boost both the speed and security of L2s in a bid to make them efficient enough so that users wouldn\u2019t need to use cross-chain bridges just to avoid long waits when moving funds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new Ethereum Foundation initiative promises trustless transfers across L2 networks.
