Nasdaq-listed SharpLink Gaming has become what appears to be the first public U.S. company to tokenize its shares on the Ethereum blockchain.\n<\/p>\n
Ethereum<\/a> treasury firm SharpLink Gaming, chaired by Consensys<\/a> founder Joseph Lubin, said it will tokenize its Nasdaq-listed SBET shares on Ethereum, becoming the first company to tokenize its SEC-registered equity on the network, according to an announcement shared with The Defiant.<\/p>\n Under the plan, with no timeframe yet specified, SharpLink will partner with tokenization startup Superstate \u2014 founded by early DeFi innovator Robert Leshner \u2014 to tokenize SBET via its Opening Bell platform, which launched<\/a> in May. Superstate will act as digital transfer agent and handle the shares natively on-chain, the announcement states. <\/p>\n SharpLink and Superstate also plan to explore how tokenized equities could one day trade on automated market makers and other decentralized finance protocols, while staying compliant with U.S. rules.<\/p>\n SharpLink Gaming co-CEO Joseph Chalom said in the announcement that tokenizing SBET shares is \u201ca statement about where we believe the future of the global capital markets is headed,\u201d with Lubin calling the effort a step toward \u201conboarding TradFi to composable DeFi on Ethereum.\u201d<\/p>\n Despite the news, SBET<\/a> is down about 8% this morning.<\/p>\n The decision to issue tokenized shares follows SharpLink\u2019s pivot to become an Ethereum treasury company<\/a> this spring. According to data<\/a> from Strategic ETH Reserve, the company now holds more than 838,000 ETH, second only to Tom Lee\u2019s BitMine, making it one of the largest corporate holders of the cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n In early September, Mike Novogratz\u2019s Galaxy Digital also partnered<\/a> with Superstate to tokenize its stock, but on Solana.
