{"id":409330,"date":"2025-10-27T09:58:22","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T04:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/microsoft-tricked-users-into-pricier-ai-linked-365-plans-says-australian-watchdog-files-lawsuit-crypto-news\/"},"modified":"2025-10-27T10:04:42","modified_gmt":"2025-10-27T04:34:42","slug":"microsoft-tricked-users-into-pricier-ai-linked-365-plans-says-australian-watchdog-files-lawsuit-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/microsoft-tricked-users-into-pricier-ai-linked-365-plans-says-australian-watchdog-files-lawsuit-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft \u2018tricked users into pricier AI-linked 365 plans,\u2019 says Australian watchdog; files lawsuit &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-index-0\">\n<p>Australia\u2019s competition watchdog has launched legal action against Microsoft, accusing the tech giant of misleading consumers into purchasing higher-priced Microsoft 365 plans after the inclusion of its artificial intelligence assistant, Copilot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-1\">\n<h2><strong>Regulator alleges misleading price push<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said that, beginning in October 2024, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/microsoft-ends-free-support-for-windows-10-from-october-14-upgrade-pay-or-switch-os-11760435200552.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Microsoft\">Microsoft<\/a> misled roughly 2.7 million Australian customers by implying they needed to upgrade to new, more expensive personal and family subscription plans that featured Copilot.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-2\">\n<p>According to the regulator, the annual price of the Microsoft 365 Personal plan rose by 45 per cent to A$159 ($103.32), while the Family plan increased by 29 per cent to A$179 ($117) following the AI assistant\u2019s integration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-3\">\n<h2><strong>Cheaper option hidden behind cancellation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The ACCC alleged that Microsoft failed to make clear that a lower-cost \u201cclassic\u201d version of Microsoft 365, withou<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/microsoft-adds-mico-avatar-long-term-memory-and-health-features-to-copilot-all-you-need-to-know-11761274911067.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"t Copilot,\">t Copilot,<\/a> remained available. Consumers were reportedly only informed of this alternative after initiating the cancellation process, a design choice the regulator said breached Australian consumer law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\">\n<p>\u201cThe omission of such material information and the presentation of limited choices created a false impression about available options,\u201d the ACCC said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\">\n<h2><strong>Legal action and potential penalties<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The commission is seeking financial penalties, consumer redress, injunctions, and legal costs from Microsoft Australia Pty Ltd and its US parent company, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/microsoft-adds-mico-avatar-long-term-memory-and-health-features-to-copilot-all-you-need-to-know-11761274911067.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Microsoft Corp.\">Microsoft Corp.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-8\">\n<p>Under Australian law, companies found guilty of misleading conduct can face maximum fines of the greater of A$50 million, three times the benefit obtained, or 30 per cent of adjusted turnover during the breach period if the benefit cannot be calculated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\">\n<p>\u201cAny penalty that might apply to this conduct is a matter for the Court to determine and would depend on the Court\u2019s findings,\u201d the ACCC said, adding that it would not speculate on the outcome.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-12\">\n<p>As of Monday, Microsoft had not issued a public statement regarding the proceedings.
