Notably, a recent report by Malwarebytes had claimed that Google had changed its settings and was now automatically training its AI on users\u2019 emails. The report also claimed that users needed to turn off the Smart features and personalisation setting to prevent Gmail from training AI on their emails.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-1\">\n<p>The report led to a barrage of angry comments on social media, with users upset about Google training AI on their personal data without explicit permission \u2014 and it turns out, Google isn\u2019t doing so.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-2\">\n<p>The company, in a social media post, clarified that it hasn\u2019t changed any settings and isn\u2019t using <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/ai\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-tool-week-gemini-gmail-schedule-meetings-faster-productivity-automate-meeting-scheduling-ai-google-calendar-11761315944903.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Gmail\">Gmail<\/a> content to train its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/google-earth-now-uses-gemini-ai-to-answer-questions-on-floods-droughts-and-more-how-the-new-feature-works-11761281491246.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Gemini AI\">Gemini AI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-3\">\n<p>In a post on X, Google said, \u201cLet&#8217;s set the record straight on recent misleading reports. Here are the facts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-4\">\n<p>\u201cWe have not changed anyone\u2019s settings. Gmail Smart Features have existed for many years. We do not use your Gmail content to train our Gemini AI model. We are always transparent and clear if we make changes to our terms &#038; policies,\u201d the tech giant added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\">\n<p>Malwarebytes subsequently updated its report to confirm that Google is not, in fact, training on users\u2019 emails, and blamed the misunderstanding on Google\u2019s ambiguous wording.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-6\">\n<p>\u201cThe settings themselves aren\u2019t new, but the way <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/nano-banana-prompts-8-epic-use-cases-everyone-is-trying-with-googles-viral-photo-editor-11763887352857.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Google\">Google<\/a> recently rewrote and surfaced them led a lot of people (including us) to believe Gmail content might be used to train Google\u2019s AI models, and that users were being opted in automatically. After taking a closer look at Google\u2019s documentation and reviewing other reporting, that doesn\u2019t appear to be the case,\u201d Malwarebytes said in its updated report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\">\n<p>Notably, this isn\u2019t the first time Google has had to deny false reports about Gmail this year. In September, Google issued a clarification after multiple media reports claimed that 2.5 billion Gmail users were compromised during a leak. The company said those reports were false and were causing unnecessary panic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-12\">\n<h2>Where Google is training your data<\/h2>\n<p>While Google has denied training Gemini on users\u2019 Gmail content, the company does automatically train on the conversations users have with its AI chatbot. This means users need to turn off the Gemini Apps Activity setting in their Google account to stop Google from training its AI models based on Gemini conversations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-13\">\n<p>Google, however, isn\u2019t alone in this practice. Anthropic recently notified users that it will, by default, train on conversations with Claude.
