A change to how its firewall handles requests \u201ccaused Cloudflare\u2019s network to be unavailable for several minutes this morning,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-2\">\n<p>It said it was \u201cinvestigating issues with Cloudflare Dashboard and related APIs,\u201d or application programming interface that allow software systems to communicate with each other.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-3\">\n<p>Cybersecurity experts say it generally takes time to pinpoint the exact cause of an outage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-4\">\n<p>But based on Cloudflare&#8217;s initial statements, Friday&#8217;s incident came &#8220;down to a database change they had made as part of planned maintenance that just went slightly awry,&#8221; according to Richard Ford, chief technology officer at Integrity360, a Europe and Africa-based cybersecurity firm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\">\n<p>It &#8220;effectively overloaded their systems,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-6\">\n<p>Edinburgh airport had to shut down briefly on Friday morning. But the airport later said the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/edinburgh-airport-computer-issue-ed5414ab93f0f15d5b884d9be3b2fb9a\">outage was a localized issue<\/a> that was not related to Cloudflare.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\">\n<p>In November, a Cloudflare outage affected users of everything from ChatGPT and the online game, \u201cLeague of Legends,\u201d to the New Jersey Transit system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-8\">\n<p>Last month <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/microsoft-azure-downdetector-service-disruption-0deffbd09c09ca4640c2f5452a9e483e\">Microsoft<\/a> had to deploy a fix to address an outage of their Azure cloud portal that left users unable to access Office 365, Minecraft and other services. The tech company wrote on its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/azure.status.microsoft\/en-us\/status\">Azure status page<\/a> that a configuration change to its Azure infrastructure caused the outage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\">\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/amazon-east-internet-services-outage-654a12ac9aff0bf4b9dc0e22499d92d7\">Amazon<\/a> also experienced a massive outage of its <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/what-to-know-about-the-amazon-web-services-outage-0000019a02c5dea7a7ba2fcda5bc0000\">cloud computing service<\/a> in October.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\">\n<p>\u201cThis is one of the things that we are going to see more and more,\u201d said cybersecurity expert Ford. \u201cWe are seeing the frequency increase as organizations put more eggs in fewer baskets, and as the complexity and the size and scale (grow) of operations like AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Cloudflare.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-12\">\n<p>This version has been updated to reflect that Edinburgh airport says its temporary shutdown was not related to the Cloudflare outage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MADRID (AP) \u2014 Internet infrastructure company Cloudflare on Friday said it had restored services following an outage that took place in the morning that brought down several global websites including LinkedIn, Zoom and others, the second such crash to affect the company in less than three weeks.
