Cloudflare<\/span><\/a> said Friday (Dec. 5) that it resolved an incident in which its network became unavailable for several minutes earlier in the day.<\/span><\/p>\n

The company first announced what it called \u201cCloudflare service issues\u201d in an 08:56 UTC Friday update on its <\/span>status page<\/span><\/a>, saying that it was investigating issues with the Cloudflare Dashboard and related APIs and that customers using the Dashboard\/Cloudflare APIs may see requests fail and\/or errors be displayed.<\/span><\/p>\n

At 09:12 UTC, Cloudflare said it had implemented a fix and was monitoring the results.<\/span><\/p>\n

At 09:20 UTC, the firm said it had resolved the incident.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cA change made to how Cloudflare\u2019s Web Application Firewall parses requests caused Cloudflare\u2019s network to be unavailable for several minutes this morning,\u201d the company said in its 09:20 UTC update. \u201cThis was not an attack; the change was deployed by our team to help mitigate the industry-wide vulnerability disclosed this week in React Server Components. We will share more information as we have it today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

React<\/span><\/a>, a library for web and native user interfaces, said in a Wednesday (Dec. 3) <\/span>blog post<\/span><\/a> that a security vulnerability in React Server Components had been reported and that the company recommended that users upgrade to a fixed version immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cloudflare\u2019s global cloud platform delivers <\/span>network services<\/span><\/a> to businesses around the world and is designed to make those businesses more secure while enhancing the performance and reliability of their internet properties, according to the company\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cloudflare service issues caused the websites for several banks, <\/span>Shopify<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Zoom<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>LinkedIn<\/span><\/a>, and the Norwegian and Swedish governments to go down, Bloomberg <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a> Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

CNBC <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a> Friday that sites affected by the issues included <\/span>Coinbase<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>Substack<\/span><\/a>, Shopify, <\/span>HSBC<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Deliveroo<\/span><\/a>. Cloudflare\u2019s software helps to manage and secure traffic for 20% of the web.<\/span><\/p>\n

Data from outage-tracking tool <\/span>Downdetector<\/span><\/a> showed that the number of reports about issues with Cloudflare peaked at about 2,000 during the incident, Reuters <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a> Friday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cloudflare experienced and resolved another <\/span>outage<\/span><\/a> on Nov. 18. That issue shut down multiple high-profile websites, including <\/span>ChatGPT<\/span><\/a>, other artificial intelligence services and social platform <\/span>X<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Cloudflare Chief Technology Officer <\/span>Dane Knecht<\/span><\/a> said after that incident, in a Nov. 18 <\/span>post<\/span><\/a> on X, \u201cThe trust our customers place in us is what we value the most, and we are going to do what it takes to earn that back.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I won\u2019t mince words: earlier today we failed our customers and the broader Internet when a problem in @Cloudflare<\/a> network impacted large amounts of traffic that rely on us. The sites, businesses, and organizations that rely on Cloudflare depend on us being available and I\u2026<\/p>\n
