While each AI company usually gives a glimpse into how to best ask questions to its models, these methods vary widely across different chatbots.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-1\">\n<p>Anthropic\u2019s resident philosopher Amanda Askell has shared detailed insights on how users can get the best results from most chatbots.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-4\">\n<p>In a Q&#038; A video released by the company, Askell says there is no single textbook for prompting and describes it as an \u201cempirical domain,\u201d meaning users must learn prompting techniques by observing and testing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\">\n<p>\u201cPrompting is very experimental,\u201d Askell explains. \u201cYou find a new model, and I\u2019ll be like, \u2018I have a whole different approach to how I prompt for that model that I find by interacting with it a lot.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-6\">\n<p>Askell says there is a need to scrap assumptions about models and look at output after output to understand the specific disposition of the model a user is working with.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\">\n<p>\u201cIt is really hard to distil what is going on because one thing is just a willingness to interact with the models a lot and to really look at output after output,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-8\">\n<p>Askell also says her training as a philosopher comes in handy in this area. She explains, \u201cThis is where I actually do think philosophy can be useful for prompting because a lot of my job is trying to explain an issue, concern or thought I\u2019m having to the model as clearly as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-11\">\n<h2>What has Anthropic previously said on prompting Claude?<\/h2>\n<p>In a Prompt Engineering Overview<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/platform.claude.com\/docs\/en\/build-with-claude\/prompt-engineering\/be-clear-and-direct\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"published\"> published<\/a> in July, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/companies\/news\/anthropic-planning-ipo-in-2026-claude-ai-chatbot-maker-listing-raise-capital-funds-backing-google-amazon-says-ft-report-11764734775128.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Anthropic\">Anthropic<\/a> added an analogy to help users understand how to work with its chatbot. The company advised users to think of Claude not just as software, but as \u201ca brilliant but very new employee with amnesia who needs explicit instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-12\">\n<p>The guide highlights that unlike a long term human colleague, the AI has no context about \u201cyour norms, styles, guidelines or preferred ways of working.\u201d Because the model starts from scratch with every interaction, Anthropic notes that the more precisely users explain what they want, the better Claude\u2019s response will be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-13\">\n<p>\u201cJust like you might be able to better perform on a task if you knew more context, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/ai\/artificial-intelligence\/estee-lauder-ai-scent-advisor-google-gemini-11764677987431.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Claude\">Claude<\/a> will perform better if it has more contextual information,\u201d the company noted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With AI chatbots increasingly being found across many spheres of life, writing the perfect prompt has become a skill in itself.
