The project said the funds were \u201cout of the hacker&#8217;s control,\u201d signaling a partial or full recovery.<\/p>\n<p>The hard fork, executed on Monday, followed a majority of validators <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/forum.gnosis.io\/t\/balancer-hack-hard-fork\/11884\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">adopting<\/a> a soft fork in November in response to the Balancer exploit affecting \u201cBalancer\u2011managed contracts on Gnosis Chain.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Source: <\/em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gnosischain\/status\/2003410653185474630\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gnosischain\/status\/2003410653185474630\"><em>Gnosis Chain<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is still a live community discussion around how people will be able to claim back their funds, as well as how contributors involved in the rescue mission may be recognized or compensated,\u201d said Gnosis head of infrastructure Philippe Schommers in a Dec. 12 forum post. \u201cRight now we\u2019re focused on enabling funds to be recovered by Christmas. Once they sit safely in a DAO controlled wallet we will figure out everything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Nov. 3, Balancer reported that the decentralized exchange and automated market maker had been exploited for more than $116 million worth of digital assets. Onchain data showed a hacker transferred millions in staked Ether (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/ethereum-price\">ETH<\/a>) to a new wallet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/balancer-suspected-70m-exploit-staked-ether-new-wallet\"><em><strong>Balancer exploit swells to $116M in outflows as team offers 20% bounty<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though Balancer later <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/balancer-community-distribute-recovered-assets-hack\">reported that white hat hackers<\/a> had managed to recover about $28 million of the stolen funds, it did not appear to have regained access to the majority of digital assets.<\/p>\n<h2>11 audits didn\u2019t prevent the Balancer exploit<\/h2>\n<p>According to a list of Balancer V2 audits available on GitHub, four different security companies <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/balancer-finance-audits-exploit-security\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/balancer-finance-audits-exploit-security\">conducted 11 audits<\/a> of the platform\u2019s smart contracts.
