It was an era\u2014back in 2021 and early 2022\u2014when Beeple sold a jpeg for <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/60971\/beeples-nft-artwork-sells-for-60-3-million-in-christies-auction\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">$69.3 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, CryptoPunks were going for <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/92819\/cryptopunks-ethereum-nft-sells-for-nearly-24m-doubling-previous-record\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">tens of millions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, and celebrities kept aping into the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/84474\/bored-ape-yacht-club-ethereum-nft-breaks-sales-record\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Bored Ape Yacht Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">The cumulative NFT market cap has dropped 99% from its 2023 all-time high of $184 billion to just $487 million, per <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/nft\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">CoinMarketCap<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. Magic Eden also offers multi-chain token trading on <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/magiceden.io\/swap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">its site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> and through its Wallet app. However, Magic Eden told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> that its expansion into token trading isn\u2019t a big deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cToken trading is not a real focus nor a meaningful percentage of our business,\u201d Chris Akhavan, Chief Business Officer at Magic Eden, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. \u201cThat market is incredibly commoditized with plenty of wallets, trading apps, DEXs, and [centralized exchanges], etc. that serve the needs of users looking to trade tokens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Butterfill from CoinShares said that despite Magic Eden\u2019s coyness, the platform has been \u201cmore aggressive\u201d than OpenSea when it comes to its token trading integration\u2014especially when engaging with Solana-based and gaming ecosystems. The analyst now sees Magic Eden as an \u201capplication layer\u201d for digital culture, which expands its \u201cstrategic identity\u201d so it is no longer solely focused on NFTs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThe changes have allowed [both] platforms to stabilize engagement numbers and to diversify fee revenue in a year when traditional NFT volumes remained subdued,\u201d Butterfill told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:400\">. \u201cIn that sense, the adaptations have worked.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cFor marketplaces to succeed long-term,\u201d he continued, \u201cthey need to offer either structural differentiation or seamless integration between NFT and token rails that users cannot easily replicate elsewhere. The first of these offerings is its <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/magiceden.io\/packs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Packs platform<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, which allows users to open virtual packs with real-world assets inside of them, currently Pok\u00e9mon cards.
