Hitherto, crypto\u2019s on-screen appearances have largely been confined to indie productions, direct-to-video crime capers, and the odd mention where it\u2019s used in lieu of money to convey a bit of futuristic gloss.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cIt still feels\u2014at least in film depictions\u2014more fringe than it is in reality,\u201d Cutter Hoderine, director of indie crypto heist thriller <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/228289\/cold-wallet-review-first-real-crypto-film\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">\u201cCold Wallet,\u201d<\/a> told <i>Decrypt<\/i>. \u201cEspecially right now, with the government of the U.S. being so gung-ho on digital currencies for better or worse, and Wall Street using Bitcoin now as an actual S&#038;P 500-esque indicator of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Partly, that\u2019s because \u201cup until recently, people didn&#8217;t really understand it,\u201d Leo Matchett, CEO of Web3 film fund Decentralized Pictures, told <i>Decrypt<\/i>. \u201cIf you look at films in the late 90s and early 2000s, they didn&#8217;t involve the internet so much,\u201d he said, adding that, \u201cWhen the internet became heavily integrated into society, you started seeing movies about hackers, online activity, and all that kind of stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Crypto is following a similar trajectory, he argued\u2014but \u201ceven today, there aren\u2019t so many mainstream use cases that are being used\u201d in our day-to-day lives. That limits the scope of what you can do with crypto on-screen, he said. \u201cFilms are a reflection of our daily lives, and as long as crypto isn&#8217;t a part of that, then it will stay out of the art as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/310054\/filmmakers-bet-web3-fix-hollywood-film-financing\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">DCP-backed<\/a> \u201cCold Wallet,\u201d crypto is \u201cjust the payment method,\u201d Hoderine explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">It functions as a \u201cdevice of value\u201d in the film, Matchett added. \u201cIt could have been anything; if you look at \u201cDie Hard: With a Vengeance,\u201d they break into the Federal Reserve and fill dump trucks with gold bars, and so the device of value in that film is gold bars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In order to explain concepts like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/?post_type=post&#038;p=5702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span class=\"sc-5475d909-4 fBeAzA\">crypto wallets<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and <span class=\"sc-5475d909-4 fBeAzA\">seed phrases<\/span>\u00a0to \u201cCold Wallet\u2019s\u201d mainstream audience, Matchett explained, \u201cwe tried to make it as simple as possible.\u201d That also meant sticking to established genre conventions; the film is, ultimately, a heist movie\/thriller, pitting a crypto CEO against the luckless bagholders he rug-pulled.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-b2a202e4-2 bmropA gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #dfe2e4\" color=\"#333\">Crypto\u2019s bad rap<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">That speaks to another aspect of how crypto has been depicted on screen to date: it\u2019s generally been associated with crime. In the likes of 2019\u2019s \u201cCrypto,\u201d and 2020\u2019s \u201cMoney Plane,\u201d it\u2019s linked to money laundering and criminals. In \u201cMission: Impossible \u2013 Dead Reckoning,\u201d a shady deal to obtain a cyberweapon is conducted in crypto (in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Bitcoin\/comments\/1523r8w\/my_favorite_scene_in_the_new_mission_impossible\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">laughable scene<\/a> with a smartphone \u201cDecrypting Blockchain,\u201d no less).<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Even when it\u2019s not linked to criminal activity, crypto is generally portrayed in a negative light on-screen. In 2023\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/200521\/steven-soderbergh-backed-nft-funded-film-lands-global-sales-deal\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">\u201cThe Quiet Maid\u201d<\/a>\u2014a film part-funded by crypto and NFTs\u2014it\u2019s the obnoxious wealthy family who hang <span class=\"link\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-axie-infinity-the-play-to-earn-nft-game-taking-crypto-by-storm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">CryptoPunks<\/a><\/span>\u00a0on the walls and dabble in cryptocurrencies, rather than the titular underdog protagonist, while in mainstream action films like 2024\u2019s \u201cThe Beekeeper\u201d and 2025\u2019s \u201cPlay Dirty,\u201d \u201ccrypto bro\u201d characters occupy a space akin to the yuppie antagonists of 1980s films.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cThey did it to themselves,\u201d Viviane Ford, director of web series \u201cCrypto Castle,\u201d told <i>Decrypt<\/i>. \u201cWhat kind of culture makes something called Pepe and pumps it and then is proud of that? Or wraps a Lamborghini in Doge?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Crypto fans \u201cmemeified themselves,\u201d Ford argued. \u201cThey became the thing that everyone hates on the internet and then they went full force down that road,\u201d she added. \u201cThey just kind of got the worst of the narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">On top of that, she said, \u201cCrypto lost a lot of money for a lot of people,\u201d through market crashes caused by the collapses of FTX and Terra. \u201cCrypto is gambling and it just tried to have a sexier version of how to frame it,\u201d Ford said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">It\u2019s striking, given crypto\u2019s issues with on-screen representation, that there\u2019s been very little in the way of product placement from crypto firms. \u201cCold Wallet\u201d featured a crypto wallet, but \u201cwe didn\u2019t get any buy-in or product placement dollars\u201d for it, Matchett said. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/229739\/monero-backed-film-limite-injustice-mexican-american-border\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">short film \u201cL\u00edmite,\u201d<\/a> meanwhile, featured <span class=\"link\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-are-privacy-coins-monero-zcash-and-dash-explained\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">Monero<\/a><\/span> as a symbol of the protagonist\u2019s \u201cpotential and his unrealized gifts,\u201d after an on-chain proposal was approved by the cryptocurrency\u2019s community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The lack of crypto product placement is partly down to crypto market cycles being out of sync with the development cycle of films, Matchett suggested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cIt&#8217;s so feast or famine,\u201d he said. Crypto firms \u201cneed to use the bull market period to gather supplies, squirrel them away so you can survive the winter.\u201d Films, meanwhile, take \u201cyears to make,\u201d meaning that, \u201cA company that&#8217;s around at the beginning of the development cycle may not be there towards the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-b2a202e4-2 bmropA gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #dfe2e4\" color=\"#333\">Changing views of crypto<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">There are signs that the tide is shifting. Some productions are starting to explore the technology in more detail, with \u201cOne Attempt Remaining\u201d actually using the mechanics of crypto wallets and seed phrases as a plot hook.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Ford\u2019s own <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vivford.com\/tv-show\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">\u201cCrypto Castle,\u201d<\/a> meanwhile, is taking a more nuanced view of the crypto community; she spent <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/entertainment-now.com\/2024\/08\/viv-ford-i-lived-in-a-house-called-crypto-castle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">four years living among crypto bros<\/a> in the titular house in San Francisco, turning her experiences into first a stand-up show, and then a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@TheCryptoCastleShow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">web series<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cI wanted all the characters on screen to be likable,\u201d she told <i>Decrypt<\/i>, \u201cwhich is really hard when you&#8217;re portraying four crypto bros.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cOriginally this idea of the blockchain and decentralized power and cross-border payments without having to wait for banks was really at the forefront of why people were doing this,\u201d she added. \u201cBut the things that catch on quick are dumb memes and a 13-year-old getting rich and then shutting down his account \u2019cos he doesn&#8217;t know what to do with it. And that is funny, if we&#8217;re going to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:0\" src=\"https:\/\/myriad.markets\/embed\/market\/oscars-2026-can-one-battle-after-another-score-9-nominations\" width=\"100%\" height=\"415px\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cThere is certainly some amazing potential\u201d in crypto, Matchett said, adding that the film world has yet to produce \u201csuccess stories\u201d showcasing the technology. \u201cPeople don&#8217;t fully understand it yet, and there&#8217;s not enough time in a film to really get into it, unless it&#8217;s a documentary,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Eventually, he argued, \u201csome brilliant creative will find a really simple way to do it in a short period of time and then tie that narrative around a war of, you know, centralized versus decentralized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Ultimately, Matchett said, crypto \u201cwill be a big part of the global economy over the next few decades.
