Musk acquired X in 2022, taking ownership of the platform and its messaging feature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-4\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>These remarks come after an international group of plaintiffs sued Meta Platforms, accusing the company of making false claims about the privacy and security of its WhatsApp chat service.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>Vembu reacts to Meta lawsuit<\/h2>\n<p>Meanwhile, Zoho&#8217;s co-founder and former CEO Sridhar Vembu also reacted to the lawsuit, stating, \u201cAs a general principle, when you rely on ads based on user habits, privacy can never be the first priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure id=\"article-index-6\" class=\"jsx-3c9baa3de245a312 story_inline_img\"><figcaption class=\"jsx-3c9baa3de245a312\">Sridhar Vembu&#8217;s post<\/figcaption><figcaption class=\"jsx-3c9baa3de245a312 psFigcaption psFigcaption2\"\/><\/figure>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>He described this approach as a real and serious \u201cconflict of interest\u201d, meaning that such model makes it difficult for platforms to genuinely put user privacy first, as their core business depends on tracking user behaviour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-8\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cCombine that with public market pressure for ever greater profit to justify astronomical valuations <br \/>(\u201cwealth creation\u201d is the polite term for it), it is naive to assume that these companies will put user privacy first,\u201d he said on X, in response to another tweet which posted the details of the lawsuit filed in the United States against Meta.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>What does the lawsuit allege?<\/h2>\n<p>In the lawsuit filed on Friday in US District Court in San Francisco, the group of plaintiffs alleged that Meta\u2019s privacy claims are false, adding that WhatsApp can \u201cstore, analyze, and access virtually all of WhatsApp users\u201d personal conversations, according to a <i>Bloomberg <\/i>report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>In response to the accusations, a spokesperson for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/industry\/media\/meta-tiktok-youtube-to-stand-trial-on-youth-addiction-claims-11769431356597.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Meta\">Meta <\/a>told the agency that the lawsuit is \u201cfrivolous\u201d, along with announcing that the company \u201cwill pursue sanctions against plaintiffs\u2019 counsel.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-11\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Meta, which acquired WhatsApp in 2014, has made \u201cend-to-end\u201d encryption a central part of WhatsApp\u2019s feature set, offering a kind of encryption that means a text is only accessible to the sender and recipient, but not the company.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-12\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>According to WhatsApp, its encrypted chats are enabled by default, with an in-app message stating that \u201conly people in this chat can read, listen to, or share\u201d the messages exchanged between two or more people.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The privacy row surrounding Meta&#8217;s WhatsApp has triggered sharp reactions across the tech industry, with rival company executives seizing on the lawsuit to question the social media giant&#8217;s handling of user data.
