But not to Claude,&#8221; Anthropic&#8217;s spots read.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>The timing of the campaign, which came weeks after OpenAI announced its decision to test ads on ChatGPT, was perhaps impeccable, with New York University marketing professor Scott Galloway and Prof G Markets podcast host describing it as &#8220;seminal moment&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>But why did it succeed? People are revealing their most intimate questions and concerns,&#8221; the professor said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-14\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;The thought that OpenAI is going to take all your personal information and start saying, &#8216;You seem to be suffering from depression; have you thought about Lexapro?&#8217; It\u2019s frightening,&#8221; he wrote. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-15\" class=\"alsoRead\"><strong>Also Read<\/strong> <!-- -->|<!-- --> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/ai\/reliance-industries-ai-investment-jio-ai-mukesh-ambani-ril-adani-ai-11771487554132.html\">Reliance to invest  \u20b910 trillion to build AI ecosystem<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-16\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>Sam Altman&#8217;s pointed response<\/h2>\n<p>OpenAI chief Sam Altman&#8217;s defensive response didn&#8217;t help either.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-17\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Taking to X shortly after the campaign, Altman wrote a lengthy post, calling Anthropic&#8217;s ads &#8220;funny&#8221; but &#8220;clearly dishonest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-18\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;Our most important principle for ads says that we won\u2019t do exactly this; we would obviously never run ads in the way Anthropic depicts them. We are not stupid and we know our users would reject that,&#8221; Altman wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-19\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>He also took a few shots at Anthropic himself, saying it serves &#8220;an expensive product to rich people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-20\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;We are glad they do that and we are doing that too, but we also feel strongly that we need to bring AI to billions of people who can\u2019t pay for subscriptions,&#8221; the OpenAI chief said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-21\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Accusing Anthropic of wanting to &#8220;control what people do with AI&#8221;, Altman charged, &#8220;&#8230;they want to write the rules themselves for what people can and can&#8217;t use AI for, and now they also want to tell other companies what their business models can be.&#8221; <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-23\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>This sharp response, however, was a strategic error according to Galloway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-24\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;Altman\u2019s response was a mistake. When you\u2019re the market leader, you don\u2019t reference the competition. You never talk about them. Hertz never referenced Avis. Coke never referenced Pepsi. If he\u2019d been asked about it, he should have said, &#8216;I\u2019ve seen it. It\u2019s a great ad.
