Tesla is preparing to move forward with a massive semiconductor manufacturing project aimed at meeting its rapidly growing artificial intelligence needs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

On Saturday (March 14), Tesla<\/a> CEO Elon Musk<\/a> announced that the company\u2019s \u201cTerafab\u201d project \u2014 a giga-sized AI chip manufacturing facility \u2014 could launch within the next seven days. The facility is expected to produce large volumes of advanced processors required for Tesla\u2019s artificial intelligence systems used in vehicles.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Growing AI demand drives chip factory plan<\/h2>\n

Musk<\/a> has previously indicated that Tesla<\/a> may need to build its own semiconductor<\/a> manufacturing facility to meet its escalating demand for AI chips<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Speaking last year, he said Tesla would \u201cprobably have to build a gigantic chip fab\u201d to support its artificial intelligence ambitions. In November, Musk again suggested that creating Tesla\u2019s own \u201cTerafab\u201d could be the only viable solution to supply the enormous number of chips the company requires.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Last month, Musk noted that Tesla\u2019s demand for AI processors could exceed even the \u201cbest-case output\u201d from existing suppliers and strategic partners.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Capacity could rival the world\u2019s largest chipmakers<\/h2>\n

The proposed Terafab facility would likely operate at more than 100,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM) \u2014 a scale that could place Tesla among the world\u2019s largest semiconductor manufacturers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Currently, Tesla relies heavily on leading chip producers<\/a> such as TSMC, Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Tesla\u2019s AI push requires massive computing power<\/h2>\n

Tesla\u2019s push into artificial intelligence is expanding rapidly. As a global carmaker Tesla operates some of the industry\u2019s largest AI supercomputing clusters to train autonomous driving systems and robotics models.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The company already uses tens of thousands of GPUs from Nvidia to train AI models.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Following the cancellation of Tesla\u2019s Dojo chip program, the company plans to rely on its AI5 processors to power both its vehicles and humanoid robots while also deploying them in data centers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Tesla could become its own chipmaker<\/h2>\n

With the Terafab initiative, Tesla could eventually transform itself into an integrated device manufacturer (IDM) \u2014 designing and producing its own semiconductors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
