Anthropic has now confirmed that its AI coding tool was indeed experiencing issues as it released a post-mortem on Thursday, revealing what went wrong with the tool.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-2\" class=\"alsoRead\"><strong>Also Read<\/strong> <!-- -->|<!-- --> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/deepseek-is-back-chinas-ai-claims-to-surpass-chatgpt-and-gemini-in-key-benchmarks-11777004433233.html\">DeepSeek is back: China&#8217;s AI claims to surpass ChatGPT and Gemini<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-3\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>In a post on X (formerly Twitter), ClaudeDevs, an account affiliated with Anthropic, wrote, \u201cOver the past month, some of you reported Claude Code&#8217;s quality had slipped. We investigated and published a post-mortem on the three issues we found. All are fixed in v2.1.116+ and we\u2019ve reset usage limits for all subscribers.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-6\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cThe issues stemmed from Claude Code and the Agent SDK harness, which also impacted Cowork since it runs on the SDK. The models themselves didn&#8217;t regress, and the Claude API was not affected,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>Users complain about Claude Code<\/h2>\n<p>Forums like Reddit and X have been filled with complaints about Claude Code slowing down and feeling worse for weeks. Not sure \u2014 feels like a downgrade!\u201d another user complained.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-13\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>What went wrong with Claude Code?<\/h2>\n<p>Anthropic\u2019s post-mortem traced the reports of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/anthropics-ai-coding-tool-claude-code-accidentally-reveals-its-source-code-heres-what-happened-11774977255558.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Claude Code\">Claude Code<\/a> quality issues to three separate updates rolled out between early March and mid-April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-14\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve traced these reports to three separate changes that affected Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK, and Claude Cowork. The API was not impacted,\u201d the company wrote in its blog post.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-15\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>First, Anthropic had lowered the default \u201creasoning effort\u201d from high to medium in early March to reduce long wait times that made the UI appear frozen for some users. While this improved speed, Anthropic says it also made the model feel less intelligent to users. Anthropic eventually rolled back this change in April after feedback from users, and Opus 4.7 defaults to &#8216;xhigh&#8217; effort now, while all other models default to &#8216;high&#8217;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-16\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Second, Anthropic had updated the caching optimisation in late March to clear Claude&#8217;s older thinking from sessions that had been idle for over an hour.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-18\" class=\"alsoRead\"><strong>Also Read<\/strong> <!-- -->|<!-- --> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/companies\/meta-microsoft-look-to-trim-workforces-amid-heavy-ai-spending-11776970430508.html\">Meta, Microsoft Look to Trim Workforces Amid Heavy AI Spending<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-19\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>A caching-related bug introduced later in March caused <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/google-taps-sergey-brin-to-lead-a-specialized-ai-strike-team-to-take-on-anthropics-claude-report-11776743898618.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Claude\">Claude<\/a> to repeatedly forget prior context in longer sessions. Instead of clearing older reasoning just once after inactivity, the system kept wiping context on every turn, making the AI appear forgetful, repetitive, and inconsistent in its coding decisions. This issue was fixed in early April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-20\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>However, the implementation had a severe bug. Instead of clearing the thinking history once, it wiped the history on every single turn for the rest of the session. This stripped Claude of its memory regarding why it was making certain tool choices, resulting in severe forgetfulness, odd tool choices, and repetitive loops.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-21\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cClaude would continue executing, but increasingly without memory of why it had chosen to do what it was doing. This surfaced as the forgetfulness, repetition, and odd tool choices people reported,\u201d Anthropic wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jsx-88c0487dd7f84825\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Google Forms AI \u2018Strike Team\u2019 To Beat Anthropic&#039;s Claude Models | Explained\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/37Tp_G1kLEY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-24\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>The bug was eventually patched on 10 April.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-25\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Third, in preparation for the launch of its newest Opus 4.7 model, Anthropic added a system prompt instruction on 16 April to reduce the model&#8217;s verbose nature. The prompt explicitly forced the AI to keep text between tool calls to under 25 words and final responses under 100 words.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-26\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>By aggressively limiting response length, the update led to a reduction in coding quality, resulting in weaker and less detailed outputs.
