North Korean hackers have stolen <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/366241\/north-korean-hackers-stolen-6-billion-crypto-trm\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">over $6 billion in crypto<\/a> since 2017, per a report from TRM Labs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cThey have to make sure that bad actors cannot engage with their systems,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what they\u2019re responsible for from their fiduciary duty as a traditional organization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Because Canton allows participants to implement guardrails for subnets they create or digital assets they issue, North Korean-linked hacking groups may struggle to infiltrate Canton projects that take advantage of those risk protections. That&#8217;s despite DeFi attackers&#8217; evolution from simple phishing attempts to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/363260\/we-are-ready-to-speak-drift-beckons-north-korea-linked-hackers-following-285m-exploit\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">months-long infiltration campaigns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> aimed at gaining privileged access to protocols.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:0\" src=\"https:\/\/myriad.markets\/embed\/market\/crude-oil-s-next-move-pump-to-120-or-dump-to-55\" width=\"100%\" height=\"415px\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display:inline-block;width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Since the network debuted in 2024, crypto purists have <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/354791\/dtcc-walled-gardens-tokenization-digital-assets-head\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">chafed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> at Canton\u2019s design, arguing that it\u2019s not a \u201ctrue\u201d blockchain partly because participants can limit users\u2019 control; however, allegations of centralization have cropped up recently within DeFi more broadly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">When <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-arbitrum-speeding-up-ethereum-using-optimistic-rollups\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Arbitrum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u2019s 12-member security council<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/364981\/arbitrum-security-council-freezes-71-5m-in-ethereum-linked-to-292m-kelpdao-exploit\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> moved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> to freeze $71 million in funds that Kelp DAO\u2019s attackers had left exposed on the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-ethereum-quickly-explained-four-minute-guide\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Ethereum<\/span><\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-are-layer-2-networks-and-sidechains-ethereum-scaling-explained\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">layer-2 scaling network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\">, for example, debate followed about whether the move compromised the fundamental, permissionless nature of DeFi.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">\u201cNobody should say that that\u2019s a bad thing,\u201d Rooz said. \u201cOne of the things that, to me, is pretty interesting about DeFi is that people want all the freedom in the world with none of the risks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Rooz acknowledged that participants on Canton can create environments that mirror the unrestricted access of networks like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-ethereum-quickly-explained-four-minute-guide\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">Ethereum<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-solana-a-scalable-decentralized-network-for-dapps\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">Solana<\/a>, but he wagered that safety parameters will be table stakes for most applications aimed at consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">However, he emphasized that projects must choose to utilize those features, and said that he doesn&#8217;t consider Canton on the whole to be a &#8220;silver bullet&#8221; solution for DeFi&#8217;s woes. But the ability to decide who has access to Canton applications and keep out potential threats appears to be a key selling point for institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">For stablecoin issuers like Tether and Circle, Rooz said that dynamic is already on display.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">After North Korean-linked attackers used the USDC issuer\u2019s infrastructure to move funds, Circle <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/364710\/circle-hit-with-class-action-lawsuit-over-285m-drift-protocol-hack\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> it wouldn\u2019t lock down stablecoins without a court order. Tether, meanwhile, has worked with authorities to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/365278\/tether-freezes-344-million-usdt-stablecoins-flagged-illicit-activity\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">freeze funds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400\"> allegedly connected to illicit finance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\"><span style=\"font-weight:400\">Ultimately, the tension between absolute decentralization and safety shows no signs of abating.
