Weeks earlier, hackers <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/blockchain\/2026\/drift-crypto-exchange-remains-frozen-as-cyberattack-continues\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">siphoned $280 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from DeFi exchange <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.drift.trade\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drift<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FT characterizes the incidents as a major blow to DeFi, which replaces intermediaries like banks and brokers with automated contracts. In this sector, the report added, the security of the blockchain is crucial. The incidents also happened at a time when the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/tracker_posts\/building-the-blockchain-blueprint-how-leading-fis-are-modernizing-money-markets-and-trust\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traditional financial world<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is experimenting with blockchain adoption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe fallout is severe,\u201d <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lucas-tcheyan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucas Tcheyan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, research associate at crypto group <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.galaxy.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galaxy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told the FT. He added that the hacks \u201cundermine[s] arguments that crypto offers a safer and more transparent alternative to legacy financial rails.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the report, the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/tag\/defi\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeFi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> space saw a growth spurt in 2020, with the market\u2019s size ballooning from less than $1 billion to around $180 billion in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"pymnt-44083927\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\">\n<p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sector has since expanded into an interwoven network of financial applications, the FT added, though those connections have been revealed as a liability following the hacks. Since then, the market has shrunk to roughly $86 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a recent episode of the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/podcast\/from-the-block\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom the Block\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> podcast, PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/ryanrugg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ryan Rugg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, global head of digital assets for <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citigroup.com\/global\/businesses\/services\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Citi Treasury and Trade Solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, explored why the Kelp DAO incident was both a technical and behavioral failure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While earlier attacks targeted private keys or flawed smart contracts, this hack involved the connective tissue of blockchain ecosystems: the messaging layer that allows for interoperability across chains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPast hacks were due to stolen keys or bugs in smart contracts, this one was convincing the vault the thief was actually the owner,\u201d Rugg said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As PYMNTS wrote, the incident <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/blockchain\/2026\/podcast-inside-the-9-billion-defi-hack-thats-shaking-cryptos-foundations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spotlights the tension<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between crypto\u2019s desire for open, interoperable systems and the institutional demand for security and control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDoes this delay the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cryptocurrency\/2026\/goldman-sachs-says-crypto-rules-will-promote-institutional-adoption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutional adoption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of DeFi?
