Anthropic restricted access to its cybersecurity-focused <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/364141\/anthropic-claude-mythos-serious-threat-overhyped-ai-security-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">Claude Mythos<\/a> model after tests showed the system could autonomously identify and exploit software flaws at levels far beyond previous public AI models.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The model has drawn attention from intelligence and security agencies because of those capabilities. In April, Anthropic\u2019s Claude Mythos identified <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/365099\/anthropic-claude-mythos-ai-271-vulnerabilities-firefox-seriously-powerful\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">271<\/a> vulnerabilities in Mozilla Firefox during internal testing, while earlier this month, security researchers said a preview version of the model helped develop an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/367925\/apple-mac-m5-system-exploited-anthropic-claude-mythos-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">exploit<\/a> targeting Apple\u2019s M5 chip protections. Researchers at the U.K. AI Security Institute also found that OpenAI\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/366371\/openais-gpt-55-matches-claude-mythos-cyberattack-ai-security-institute\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">GPT-5.5<\/a> has demonstrated advanced offensive cyber capabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cBugs in computer code are scary,\u201d Buterin wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Undiscovered bugs can be devastating for crypto projects, where software flaws can be exploited to permanently steal users&#8217; funds with little chance of recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In April, attackers from the North Korea-backed Lazarus Group were able to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/367527\/north-korean-crypto-hackers-stole-2-1b-in-2025-60-of-all-losses-certik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">drain<\/a> $292 million worth of tokens from Kelp DAO\u2019s infrastructure after &#8220;poisoning&#8221; internal RPCs used by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/367880\/kraken-migrate-wrapped-bitcoin-chainlink-layerzero-exodus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">LayerZero<\/a> Labs. All told, North Korean state-sponsored hackers are believed to have stolen <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/366241\/north-korean-hackers-stolen-6-billion-crypto-trm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">more than $6 billion worth of cryptocurrency<\/a> to date.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Buterin said formal verification could also improve trust in AI-generated software by proving that optimized low-level code matches a more readable reference implementation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cA huge part of the value-add is that the proofs are truly end-to-end,\u201d Buterin wrote. \u201cOften, the nastiest bugs are interaction bugs that sit at the edge of two sub-systems that are considered separately.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">However, while Buterin sees the potential for AI to help secure crypto network code, he cautioned that formal verification cannot fully eliminate security risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cFormal verification is not a panacea. But it is particularly well-suited for situations where the goal is much simpler than the implementation,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThis is particularly true in some of the most devilishly hard pieces of technology that we will need to deploy in the next major iteration of Ethereum: quantum-resistant signatures, STARKs, consensus algorithms, and ZK-EVMs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Buterin rejected the idea that increasingly advanced cyberattacks will eventually make open-source software or decentralized systems impossible to secure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cThis would be a bleak future for cybersecurity.
