Psychosis: Misnomers, Conceptual Limits, and Existential Drift,\u201d examines concerns that AI chatbots may reinforce delusions, paranoia, and emotional dependency in vulnerable users.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cThere has been a proliferation of media reports about so-called AI psychosis in the last year,\u201d the researchers wrote. \u201cNot surprisingly, this has prompted growing academic work on the ways in which AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/248618\/ai-companion-virtual-replika-ceo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">Replika<\/a> might aggravate or even induce psychosis, typically understood in terms of users acquiring or maintaining delusional beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:0\" src=\"https:\/\/myriad.markets\/embed\/market\/claude-mythos-released-by-june-30\" width=\"100%\" height=\"415px\"><span style=\"display:inline-block;width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The study out of the University of Copenhagen and the University of Exeter argues fears around \u201cAI psychosis\u201d may oversimplify the issue, suggesting chatbots amplify existing vulnerabilities while gradually reshaping how users relate to reality and other people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cIf AI interaction were capable of inducing psychosis de novo, we might expect to see significantly higher rates of clinical incidents,\u201d the study said. \u201cInstead, it might be supposed that the human-AI interaction seems to have the potential to kindle or aggravate pre-existing mental health issues\u2014and relatedly, that perhaps these individuals also had vulnerabilities that made them seek out more intense interactions with a chatbot in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The paper comes as lawsuits, criminal investigations, and academic studies increasingly focus on chatbot interactions linked to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/360774\/ai-chatbots-teen-mass-shooting-violence-ccdh-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">mass shootings<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/353227\/openai-microsoft-sued-over-chatgpt-connecticut-murder-suicide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">suicide<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">In March, a wrongful death <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/359966\/google-gemini-ai-pushed-florida-man-suicide-lawsuit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">lawsuit<\/a> accused Google\u2019s Gemini chatbot of reinforcing a Florida man\u2019s delusions and fictional \u201cmissions\u201d before his suicide. This incident was followed in April with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issuing a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/365645\/openai-sam-altman-apologizes-not-alerting-police-tumbler-ridge-mass-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">public apology<\/a> to the community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, after the company failed to alert law enforcement about a user account linked to the suspect in a February mass shooting that killed eight people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Researchers say chatbots can create \u201cdelusional spirals\u201d by reinforcing false beliefs through affirmation and emotional reassurance. However, the Rethinking AI Psychosis study argues the phenomenon resembles older forms of psychosis shaped by the dominant technologies of their time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The debate has also spread beyond mental health research to social media. In a recent X post, Box founder Aaron Levie argued that CEOs can become overly convinced by AI\u2019s capabilities because they often see polished prototype results without dealing with the operational, legal, and technical work required behind the scenes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cCEOs are uniquely prone to AI psychosis because they\u2019re sufficiently distant from the last mile of work that still has to happen to generate most value with AI,\u201d Levie <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/levie\/status\/2058582370253701432?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cSo when they play with AI, they see the happy path results, often not considering the next 10 or 20 things that have to happen to get sustainable results from agents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Experts describe this as a kind of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41548425\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">epistemic drift<\/a>, when, over time, users may place more trust in the chatbot\u2019s fluent interpretation than in external evidence or other perspectives. However, the Rethinking AI Psychosis paper goes further with a concept the authors call \u201cexistential drift,\u201d describing a gradual shift in how a person experiences reality itself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cIt creates a rift between the person and the shared social world, whilst simultaneously disclosing reality in a new way, thus stabilizing a particular, often idiosyncratic, perspective on the world,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The researchers argue that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/360213\/digisexual-subculture-people-relationships-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">AI companions<\/a> simulate emotional understanding and social interaction without providing genuine disagreement or an independent perspective.
