Setty said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-1\">\n<p>\u201cI think we need a large number of skilled manpower to deploy the AI itself. I think this is something what we are really facing in the market now, that while AI capital investments, everybody is ready for, the availability of the manpower to deploy these AI tools is actually becoming a challenge,\u201d Setty said at the Citi India 2026 event.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-2\">\n<p>His comments come amid growing concerns that rapid <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/opinion\/online-views\/indian-boards-legal-liability-risks-reckless-ai-adoption-d-o-directors-artificial-intelligence-11779775785998.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"AI adoption\">AI adoption<\/a> could displace jobs and weaken India&#8217;s demographic advantage. Setty, however, said the bigger challenge is workforce adaptation rather than job destruction.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-4\">\n<p>Setty also said automation has created a disconnect globally between capital investment and job creation, particularly in manufacturing. \u201cThe amount of capital invested and the jobs created always is a disconnect across the globe,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\">\n<p>However, he expressed confidence that India\u2019s services sector and engineering talent pool would help the country navigate the transition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-6\">\n<h2>Job fears<\/h2>\n<p>Referring to concerns that AI could replace coding jobs, he said fears of widespread displacement may be overstated. \u201cA lot of people said that in the tech IT job, for instance, the coding moving to AI, a lot of people will lose jobs. But in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/ai\/artificial-intelligence\/vinod-khosla-predicts-ai-will-kill-indian-it-sector-in-five-years-11771343050947.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"IT sector\">IT sector<\/a>, 99% of the workforce are engineers. And these are the people who can be re-skilled in a short span of time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\">\n<p>Setty rejected suggestions that India had missed the AI opportunity, saying the country was well-positioned to emerge as one of the largest beneficiaries of the technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\">\n<p>According to the chairman, only healthcare and manufacturing are the sectors that are already witnessing large-scale adoption of generative and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/opinion\/online-views\/agentic-ai-legal-liability-artificial-intelligence-collusion-accountability-surveillance-personalized-pricing-11780323021709.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"agentic AI\">agentic AI<\/a>, largely aimed at boosting productivity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\">\n<p>On digital currencies, Setty said India&#8217;s policy focus remains centred on central bank digital currency (CBDC) rather than cryptocurrencies, though wider adoption would depend on identifying compelling use cases beyond payments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-11\">\n<p>\u201cCBDC definitely requires some kind of repurposing in the sense that in a very mature payment ecosystem, CBDC positioning as a payment mechanism is not going to work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-12\">\n<p>With India&#8217;s digital payments infrastructure already highly developed, policymakers are exploring programmable CBDCs that can be used for targeted government transfers and other specific purposed. \u201cFor most of the direct benefit transfer, where a specific purpose is intended, CBDC can be effectively deployed,\u201d he said<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-13\">\n<p>The current policy focus is on developing retail and wholesale CBDC frameworks, he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mumbai: As Indian companies ramp up spending on artificial intelligence (AI), a shortage of skilled talent to deploy AI solutions is emerging as one of the biggest challenges to the country\u2019s adoption of the technology, State Bank of India (SBI) chairman C.S.
