In other words, you want the government to save us from\u2026 you,&#8221; wrote Sacks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Meanwhile, 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney wrote on X, \u201cOur highest and most urgent national priority should be AI safeguards. The risks of AI weapons, pathogens, mass unemployment, surveillance, and even extinction must not continue to be largely ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-11\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Andrew B. Chennai-born Trump AI adviser steps down<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-14\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;This would have seemed totally non-credible even pretty recently, but between what we&#8217;ve seen with the EO, Glasswing, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/companies\/news\/chat-is-dead-openai-plans-biggest-chatgpt-overhaul-ahead-of-ipo-pivots-to-ai-agents-says-report-11780809387032.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"OpenAI\">OpenAI<\/a>&#8216;s proposal for beefed-up model review yesterday, it no longer seems so far-fetched,&#8221; Hall wrote on X.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-15\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Hall added that while he remains sceptical, he is interested in seeing whether the mechanisms Anthropic, Demis Hassabis and others propose can coordinate a possible future slowdown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-16\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;If nothing else, it might be possible to agree to slow down consumer release of models separate from development, something Hassabis seems to support based on my read of The Infinity Machine and his preference for pure research,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-17\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Gary Marcus, a prominent <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/us-news\/trumps-ai-wealth-plan-how-americans-could-gain-stakes-in-openai-anthropic-other-trillion-dollar-tech-companies-11780799360989.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"AI\">AI<\/a> researcher and professor emeritus at New York University, said that Anthropic doesn&#8217;t really want a pause on AI development and is instead playing out a rhetorical strategy ahead of its IPO this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-18\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cReading between the lines, they want it both ways. They don\u2019t actually want a pause, at least for now. Rather, they want to (and will) rush ahead, hinting at \u2018least cautious actors\u2019 for justification,\u201d Marcus noted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-19\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cInstead, they want people to talk about an \u2018option\u2019 they don\u2019t actually plan to take, and are unlikely to ever take.
