Most of them use it for free. That&#8217;s the problem the company is trying to solve before it goes public.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The plan, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ca0f5f5e-fb9a-41a0-a2a9-0127e15b7db9\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">reported<\/a> by the <i>Financial Times<\/i> based on interviews with more than a dozen current and former employees, is to turn ChatGPT into a superapp\u2014a single interface for coding, task automation, image generation, and partner apps. The redesign is internally codenamed &#8220;Aria.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">OpenAI has not confirmed the codename or a hard launch date. Changes to the website and mobile apps are expected to begin rolling out in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Thibault Sottiaux, who previously ran Codex and now leads all of OpenAI&#8217;s core product and platform, told the FT the goal is an assistant &#8220;capable of helping you across everything in your life, be it personally or at work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border:0\" src=\"https:\/\/myriad.markets\/embed\/market\/who-ipos-first-d112e68a-b7d1-4991-9f77-ca2db82cdc99\" width=\"100%\" height=\"415px\"><span style=\"display:inline-block;width:0px;overflow:hidden;line-height:0\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">\u201cChat is dead,\u201d a senior OpenAI employee told the <i>Financial Times<\/i>\u2014not exactly what you&#8217;d expect to hear from the company that built its empire on a product called ChatGPT<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-b2a202e4-2 bmropA gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #dfe2e4\" color=\"#333\">WeChat did it. Everyone else tried.<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The superapp idea has a model: WeChat, Tencent&#8217;s everything-app, which started as a messaging platform in 2011 and now handles <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mediascope.group\/wechat-ecosystem-an-overview-of-chinas-digital-super-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">45 billion messages a day<\/a> for 1.4 billion monthly users. WeChat Pay and Alipay process <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinlaw.io\/wechat-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">$40 trillion<\/a> in annual transactions . Chinese users book doctors, pay taxes, and hail rides without ever leaving the app. It stopped being a social network a long time ago and turned into software infrastructure in its own right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Elon Musk has been chasing that model since he bought Twitter in 2022. He&#8217;s said publicly he wants X to be the Western WeChat. In 2025, he launched XChat encrypted messaging and X Money payments, the latter through a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/01\/28\/elon-musk-x-visa-digital-wallet.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">Visa partnership<\/a> for peer-to-peer transfers. X has somewhere between 500 and 600 million users. The payments ambition hasn&#8217;t taken off. Meta tried it with Messenger bots in 2016 and WhatsApp payments for years. It also didn&#8217;t stick.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">OpenAI&#8217;s pitch is different. It&#8217;s not trying to build a social network\u2014arguably a failed experiment that started and ended with Sora. Instead, it&#8217;s starting from a platform people already use for work\u2014and making that work platform do more work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">The Codex coding agent can write, debug, and deploy software from a text prompt. The ChatGPT Agent, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/330714\/openais-chatgpt-agent-launches-expanded-powers-elevated-risk\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">launched in July 2025<\/a>, can browse the web, run apps, and place orders autonomously. Workspace agents, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/365220\/openai-workspace-agents-feature-chatgpt\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">released in April 2026<\/a>, run persistent multi-step workflows inside Slack and other enterprise tools.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">That&#8217;s the stack OpenAI is consolidating into one interface.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"sc-b2a202e4-2 bmropA gg-dark:text-white scene:font-itc-avant-garde-gothic-pro scene:font-light\" style=\"margin-top:2em;text-align:left;padding-bottom:16px;margin-bottom:16px;border-bottom:1px solid #dfe2e4\" color=\"#333\">The IPO math<\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">OpenAI&#8217;s annualized revenue has passed $20 billion. Business customers account for 40% of it\u2014and the majority of Codex users pay, unlike the majority of ChatGPT users who don&#8217;t. Jenny Xiao, a Leonis Capital partner and former OpenAI researcher, told the FT that a year ago OpenAI was &#8220;swing for the fences&#8221; while Anthropic was &#8220;make money first.&#8221; Now, she said, &#8220;the two are converging, because both of them are trying to aim for an IPO and investors care more about money than dreams.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Anthropic is the direct pressure. Claude Code crossed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anthropic.com\/news\/anthropic-raises-30-billion-series-g-funding-380-billion-post-money-valuation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">$2.5 billion<\/a> in annualized revenue by early 2026\u2014faster than any enterprise software product before it\u2014and enterprise now accounts for roughly 80% of Anthropic&#8217;s total sales. Also, they seem to have beaten OpenAI in the IPO game, officially initiating its initial public offering process by confidentially <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/369641\/ai-giant-anthropic-files-go-public-nearing-1-trillion-valuation\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">submitting<\/a> a draft Form S-1 with the SEC last week. OpenAI is now playing catch up, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/370468\/openai-confidential-ipo-filing-keeps-timing-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"sc-adb616fe-0 bJsyml\">filing confidentially<\/a> for its own IPO today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-meta-serif-pro scene:font-noto-sans scene:text-base scene:md:text-lg font-normal text-lg md:text-xl md:leading-9 tracking-px text-body gg-dark:text-neutral-100\">Alex Embiricos, OpenAI&#8217;s head of enterprise product, told the FT where he thinks this ends: &#8220;When we have AGI, I don&#8217;t think there will be a large number of distinct brands. Probably there will be a single entity that I can talk to that can do whatever I need.&#8221; OpenAI is also acquiring Python toolmaker Astral to fold developer tools directly into Codex.
