The move comes just a day after the Centre issued a notice to Meta over WhatsApp&#8217;s planned username feature, citing concerns around online fraud and impersonation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-1\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>Arattai to disable usernames<\/h2>\n<p>In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Zoho chief scientist and former CEO <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/after-anthropic-blocks-access-to-mythos-fable-5-zohos-sridhar-vembu-says-bharat-must-find-its-own-way-ahead-11781338049892.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Sridhar Vembu\">Sridhar Vembu<\/a> said <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/sridhar-vembu-announces-arattai-expansion-to-android-tv-with-new-year-update-how-to-install-features-and-more-11767278859323.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Arattai\">Arattai<\/a> would discontinue its username-based account system to comply with the new regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-2\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;We will be disabling the username-based account feature in Arattai, to comply with the regulatory change,&#8221; Vembu wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-3\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Vembu did not explain whether he had also received a request from the government regarding the username feature.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-4\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>Why is the government concerned?<\/h2>\n<p>Notably, the Centre had sprung into action recently after <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/tech-news\/whatsapp-issues-username-faqs-amid-govt-scrutiny-can-someone-find-you-with-it-could-you-be-impersonated-check-details-11783012805972.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"WhatsApp\">WhatsApp<\/a> announced that it was opening enrolment for its username feature, which allows users to contact other members on the app without the need to know their phone number.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>The Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) has reportedly asked the company to explain the feature within three days and advised it not to roll it out until consultations with the government are completed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-6\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>As per a notice sent to WhatsApp, quoted by ANI, the government believes usernames could make it easier for scammers to carry out phishing attacks, digital arrest scams and impersonation attempts by allowing bad actors to create usernames that resemble those of individuals, government agencies or financial institutions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;It is felt that the feature may materially increase the incidence of online fraud, phishing, digital arrest scams and impersonation attacks, by enabling bad actors to solicit and message victims. Furthermore, this feature may facilitate impersonation and identity spoofing, including impersonation of individuals, public authorities, financial institutions, and government agencies, by permitting the adoption of usernames closely resembling those of genuine persons or institutions,&#8221; the notice read.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-8\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>What has WhatsApp said?<\/h2>\n<p>WhatsApp has clarified that the username feature is not yet live and will roll out gradually later this year. The company has also said it has already reserved usernames corresponding to public figures, government entities, celebrities and verified Meta accounts to reduce the risk of impersonation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>&#8220;The ability to use a username is not yet live and will roll out slowly later this year. To protect against impersonation, we&#8217;ve held the highest-profile names \u2013 think public figures, government entities, celebrities, verified Meta accounts \u2013 so they can only ever be claimed by their legitimate owners, and lookalike derivatives of known names are held as well,&#8221; a WhatsApp spokesperson was quoted by ANI as saying.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jsx-88c0487dd7f84825\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Can WhatsApp Be Trusted With Its New User Name Upgrade? MeitY has reportedly sent notices to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/india\/telegram-signal-asked-by-it-ministry-to-explain-anti-fraud-measures-in-username-features-after-whatsapp-notice-11783012871653.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Telegram\">Telegram<\/a> and Signal, asking how the two platforms are addressing concerns related to fraud, impersonation and identity spoofing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-13\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>A government source told news agency PTI that Telegram has been specifically asked why it should be allowed to continue offering the username feature.
