Now, the platform said it is taking a more active role.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-5\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Utilising a dedicated AI system developed alongside safety experts, Meta said it will proactively notify supervising parents if their teen\u2019s chat indicates a potential risk\u2014even if the references to self-harm are subtle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-6\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cWe worked with parents and experts to understand which AI conversations warrant an alert \u2014 such as those where a teen makes a clear reference to hurting themselves, even if that reference is subtle,\u201d Meta said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-7\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Recognising the distress these alerts may cause, Meta added that it has instituted a strict screening process. Every chat flagged by the AI \u201cwill be manually reviewed before an alert is sent.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-8\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>If a teenager&#8217;s intent remains ambiguous after review, Meta said it will err on the side of caution and issue the alert. \u201cWhile that means we may sometimes notify parents when there may not be a real cause for concern, we feel this is the right starting point, and we\u2019ll continue to monitor to help make sure we\u2019re in the right place.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-9\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Larry Magid, CEO and Co-Founder of ConnectSafely, said that while he believes that teens have a right to privacy, \u201cI also believe parents need to be informed if their teen may be at risk of hurting themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-10\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why I advocated for this approach and support Meta\u2019s decision to notify parents when, after careful review, it determines that a conversation with Meta AI contains indications of possible suicide or self-harm that warrant an alert,\u201d Magid said. \u201cI appreciate how Meta struck the right balance; protecting teen privacy while ensuring parents have the information they need to support their teen.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-11\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Currently, these alerts are live for parents utilising Instagram\u2019s parental supervision tools in the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-12\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>The feature will soon be rolled out globally by the end of the year, Meta said, building upon existing alerts triggered when teens repeatedly search for self-harm terms on Instagram.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-13\" class=\"alsoRead\"><strong>Also Read<\/strong> <!-- -->|<!-- --> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/news\/trends\/after-18-years-in-us-meta-executive-returns-to-bengaluru-to-be-closer-to-family-the-bay-gave-me-my-career-11784117532487.html\">Meta executive moves back to India after 18 years. Here&#8217;s why<\/a><\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-14\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<h2>Emergency service integration<\/h2>\n<p>Beyond parental alerts, Meta said it is developing capabilities to contact emergency services if any user, teen or adult, shows imminent risk of suicide in their Meta AI conversations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-15\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>This expands on Meta&#8217;s existing protocols across <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"backlink\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/technology\/instagram-facebook-down-thousands-of-users-report-mass-outage-netizens-say-no-posts-coming-up-on-feed-after-refresh-11784452743098.html\" data-vars-page-type=\"story\" data-vars-link-type=\"Manual\" data-vars-anchor-text=\"Facebook and Instagram\">Facebook and Instagram<\/a>, which resulted in over 19,000 global referrals for wellness checks by first responders last year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-16\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>To refine the AI\u2019s handling of these critical moments, Meta said it consulted with over 75 mental health clinicians specialising in teen psychology, alongside its AI Wellbeing Expert Council and Youth Advisors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-17\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>These experts, Meta said, reviewed hundreds of AI responses to ensure the chatbot appropriately acknowledges the user&#8217;s feelings rather than abruptly shutting down the conversation before directing them to offline support.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-18\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>Dr Ji-yeon Lee, a Licensed Psychologist and Professor of Counseling Psychology at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, commended the initiative, saying, \u201cI was struck by the rigour of Meta\u2019s clinical review process.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-index-19\" class=\"storyParagraph\">\n<p>\u201cIt examined not only immediate responses to suicide and self-harm concerns, but also the broader conversational context, appropriate follow-up, and the varying levels of risk that can exist even within high-risk situations.
