{"id":434874,"date":"2026-07-23T00:17:04","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T18:47:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/tech-layoffs-hit-2-year-high-as-companies-embrace-ai-crypto-news\/"},"modified":"2026-07-23T00:28:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T18:58:46","slug":"tech-layoffs-hit-2-year-high-as-companies-embrace-ai-crypto-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dripp.zone\/news\/tech-layoffs-hit-2-year-high-as-companies-embrace-ai-crypto-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech Layoffs Hit 2-Year High as Companies Embrace AI &#8211; Crypto News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>Technology companies in the United States announced 38,242 job cuts in May, an almost two-year high.<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-paywall-hidden-content\">\n<p>For the third consecutive month, artificial intelligence was the main reason cited by employers for these layoffs, outplacement firm <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.challengergray.com\/\">Challenger, Gray and Christmas<\/a> (CGC) said in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.challengergray.com\/blog\/challenger-report-may-job-cuts-rise-16-from-april-highest-may-total-since-2020\/\">report<\/a> issued Thursday (June 4).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe labor market is being reshaped by technology in real time,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/andrewchallenger\">Andy Challenger<\/a>, labor and workplace expert and chief revenue officer at CGC, said in the report. \u201cAI is now the leading reason companies give for cutting <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/ai-layoff-news-sparks-ai-washing-worries\/\">jobs,<\/a> and the primary industry citing it is technology. Technology, already the year\u2019s biggest job cutter, saw its steepest month of cuts since early 2023, even as it remains the sector with the most hiring plans this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So far this year, U.S. tech companies have announced 123,653 cuts, a 66% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The sector is the top source of layoffs this year \u201cby a wide margin,\u201d according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>In all, U.S. companies announced 97,006 job cuts in May, up 16% from 83,387 job cuts in April, and up 3% from the 93,816 announced in May 2025. It was the highest month for layoffs since May 2020, when companies cut 397,016 jobs at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>Employers have announced 397,755 cuts so far this year, a 43% drop compared to the first five months of last year. However, the decrease is due to the sweeping government <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/cfpb\/2025\/reports-cfpb-laying-off-90-of-staff\/\">job cuts<\/a> in the early days of the second President Donald Trump administration, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn top of the headline AI story, we\u2019re seeing a sharp rise in cuts tied to acquisitions and mergers and a jump in bankruptcy-related losses, which tells me companies are restructuring aggressively as they reposition for an AI-driven economy,\u201d Challenger said in the report.<\/p>\n<p>Among the companies announcing AI-related layoffs last month were <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/meta\/2026\/meta-workers-fear-further-job-cuts-as-layoffs-begin\/\">Meta<\/a> (8,000 jobs), <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/business\/2026\/intuit-to-cut-17percent-of-workforce-in-shift-toward-ai\/\">Intuit<\/a> (around 3,000 jobs) and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/business\/2026\/groupon-cuts-400-jobs-to-fund-ai-pivot\/\">Groupon<\/a> (400 jobs).<\/p>\n<p>PYMNTS examined the trend in April after a series of layoffs in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/personnel\/2026\/fintechs-cut-staff-as-ai-and-margins-redefine-growth\/\">FinTech<\/a> space, reporting that AI is \u201calready altering staffing requirements.\u201d AI tools can write code, automate documentation, examine risk signals and manage client interactions, reducing the need for large teams in some functions.<\/p>\n<p><em>For all PYMNTS AI coverage, subscribe to the daily <\/em><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pymnts.com\/subscribe\/\"><em>AI Newsletter<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Technology companies in the United States announced 38,242 job cuts in May, an almost two-year high.
