The Department of Commerce<\/a> plans to provide $2.013 billion in federal incentives to nine companies to support and accelerate their development of quantum computing.<\/p>\n The Department signed letters of intent with the companies, and its CHIPS Research and Development Office<\/a> will provide the incentives, the Department\u2019s National Institute of Standards and Technology<\/a> (NIST) said in a Thursday (May 21) press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n The incentives are designed to strengthen America\u2019s position in quantum computing, which is a frontier technology that has significant implications for national security and technological resilience, according to the release.<\/p>\n The agreements also are designed to provide a return for U.S. taxpayers by supplying the Commerce Department with a minority, non-controlling stake in each company, per the release.<\/p>\n \u201cWith today\u2019s CHIPS Research and Development investments in quantum computing, the Trump administration is leading the world into a new era of American innovation,\u201d Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick<\/a> said in the release. \u201cThese strategic quantum technology investments will build on our domestic industry, creating thousands of high-paying American jobs while advancing American quantum capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n PYMNTS reported in February 2025 that quantum computing<\/a> harnesses the properties of quantum mechanics to perform complex calculations at unprecedented speeds.<\/p>\n The proposed incentives announced Thursday include $1 billion for IBM<\/a>; $375 million for GlobalFoundries<\/a>; $100 million each for Atom Computing<\/a>, D-Wave<\/a>, Infleqtion<\/a>, PsiQuantum<\/a>, Quantinuum<\/a> and Rigetti<\/a>; and $38 million for Diraq<\/a>, according to the release.<\/p>\n IBM said in a Thursday press release<\/a> that the proposed CHIPS award will support America\u2019s first purpose-built quantum foundry, Anderon<\/a>, which will produce advanced quantum wafers for a broad range of companies.<\/p>\n IBM Chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna<\/a> said in the release: \u201cWith the support of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Anderon will be well-positioned to fuel America\u2019s fast-growing quantum technology industry.\u201d<\/p>\n GlobalFoundries said in a Thursday press release<\/a> that the proposed award will accelerate the build-out of Quantum Technology Solutions, a new business that will scale quantum manufacturing.<\/p>\n The incentives announced Thursday are provided under the CHIPS and Science Act<\/a>, according to the NIST press release.<\/p>\n
