Each firm&#8217;s solvency depended partly on the others staying solvent, so one failure pulled the next one down.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/blockfi\/\">BlockFi<\/a> filed for bankruptcy within weeks of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/ftx\/\">FTX&#8217;s<\/a> collapse, as it had relied on a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/ftx-gives-blockfi-400m-credit-facility-has-buy-option-for-up-to-240-million\/\">$400 million FTX credit facility<\/a>, and Voyager, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/celsius-network\/\">Celsius<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/genesis\/\">Genesis<\/a> had <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/celsius-officially-declares-bankruptcy-after-paying-down-defi-loans\/\">already gone bankrupt<\/a> or halted withdrawals once <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/voyager-digital-caves-and-files-for-chapter-11-bankruptcy\/\">the Terra\/Luna collapse<\/a> hit the sector months earlier.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department said <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/people\/sam-bankman-fried\/\">Sam Bankman-Fried<\/a> orchestrated one of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/sbf-trial-forensic-accountant-reveals-almost-70-of-alamedas-loans-were-serviced-with-ftx-customer-funds\/\">largest financial frauds<\/a> in history, stealing over $8 billion in customer money that funded personal spending, investments, political contributions and loan repayments to Alameda.<\/p>\n<p>BitMEX&#8217;s shutdown avoids those ingredients via a scheduled closure, the product of a business review, with a withdrawal deadline and no disclosed customer shortfall.<\/p>\n<h2>The drawdown so far<\/h2>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/coins\/bitcoin\/\">Bitcoin<\/a> peaked near $126,000 in October 2025, and trades around $64,884 as of July 23, a decline of roughly 48%.<\/p>\n<p>Prior completed cycles fell further before finding a bottom: roughly 84.7% in 2013-2015, 83.7% in 2017-2018, and 77.1% in 2021-2022, according to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/charts.bitcoin.com\/drawdown.html\">Bitcoin.com&#8217;s drawdown tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That gap is real, and it is also incomplete information. Welcome aboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>BlockFills, a firm with more than 2,000 institutional clients and over $61 billion in 2025 trading volume, paused client deposits and withdrawals in February <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/price-watch\/\">as prices fell<\/a> and said it was working to restore liquidity.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/trm-labs\/\">TRM Labs<\/a> recorded 207 crypto hacks <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-hacks-hit-a-record-count-but-the-biggest-threat-isnt-smart-contracts\/\">in the first half of 2026<\/a>, the highest six-month count in its data, more than double the 83 incidents in the same period last year. Losses fell to about $972 million from $2.3 billion over that same stretch.<\/p>\n<p>Smart contract exploits drove most of that incident count, and infrastructure and operational compromises like KelpDAO&#8217;s accounted for a disproportionate share of the dollar losses.<\/p>\n<p>On Apr. 18, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/companies\/chainalysis\/\">Chainalysis<\/a> linked the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/after-the-16-5-billion-in-exploits-defi-now-forced-toward-the-controls-it-once-resisted\/\">roughly $292 million KelpDAO theft<\/a> to North Korea&#8217;s Lazarus Group and traced it to compromised internal RPC nodes, DDoS attacks on external nodes, and false data fed into a verification system.<\/p>\n<h2>Where the cycle goes from here<\/h2>\n<p>In the bull case, Bitcoin&#8217;s drawdown bottoms somewhere between 45% and 55%. Weak venues keep shutting down or getting acquired without a major exchange or lender shortfall, and exploit losses continue below 2025 levels.<\/p>\n<p>That would leave this cycle&#8217;s centralized failures looking structurally different from 2022&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>In the bear case, the drawdown extends toward 70% to 75%.
