At the time, hackers stole over $200 million from decentralized finance projects.  However, it is still significantly higher than the $35.3 million stolen in February.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_321620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-321620\" style=\"width: 1291px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-321620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Peckshield<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, defilelama <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/hacks\">date<\/a> showed that DeFi projects lost $276.4 million during the first quarter of the year.<\/p>\n<h2>The exploits<\/h2>\n<p>In terms of monetary value, the biggest exploit was the sandwich attack on maximal extractable value (MEV) bots that resulted in a loss of $25 million. <em>CryptoSlate<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/crypto-community-criticizes-tether-for-blacklisting-wallet-that-drained-20m-from-mev-bots\/\">Reported<\/a> that USDT issuer Tether blacklisted the validator address that drained the bots \u2014 drawing criticism from the crypto community.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, MEV bots have long been controversial in the industry, considering their penchant for extracting value from crypto traders.  According to the MEV blocker, these bots have extracted over $1.38 billion from blockchain network users.<\/p>\n<p>For context, one anonymous MEV bot operator, Jaredfromthesubsway, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/mev-bot-responsible-for-7-of-total-gas-on-ethereum-network-in-24-hours\/\">made more than $1.4 million<\/a> by sandwiching transactions of crypto investors trading meme coins.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Singapore-based exchange Bitrue <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/bitrue-hack-leads-over-7-qnt-dump-in-4-hours\/\">Lost<\/a> almost $23 million in a hack after one of its hot wallets was compromised.  Another centralized exchange Gdac was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/korea-based-exchange-gdac-suspends-withdrawals-and-deposits-after-13m-hack\/\">exploited<\/a> For $ 13 Million.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, multiple decentralized finance protocols were victims of various hacks within the month.  The affected projects included Yearn Finance, Hundred Finance, SushiSwap, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/polygon-based-protocol-0vix-exploited-for-2m\/\">0vix protocol<\/a>And Terraport.<\/p>\n<p>The most notable in recent days was the zkSync-based decentralized exchange Merlin DEX which <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/certik-says-it-highlighted-centralization-risks-in-merlin-dex-audit\/\">Lost<\/a> roughly $2 million to rogue developers.  Blockchain security firm CertiK audited the project before its launch and has promised to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cryptoslate.com\/certik-offers-merlin-dex-rogue-developers-20-white-hat-bounty\/\">refund<\/a> Impacted users.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, hackers are still relying on mixers to move their ill-gotten funds.
