Microsoft recently unveiled the Xbox Series S Black during its annual Xbox Games Showcase. This upgraded version of the Xbox Series S features a sleek Carbon Black finish and boasts 1TB of internal storage. Although pre-orders for the console are now available, it will not be released until September 1, 2023.

Notably, the Xbox Series S Black comes with a $50 price increase compared to its predecessor, retailing at $349.99 ( 28,734.42). On the other hand, Sony has increased the prices of the PS5 due to global inflation. While the US price remains the same, the PS5 Digital Edition now costs £389.99 / €449.99 / $AU649.95/ 39,990.

Released in 2020, the Xbox Series S quickly gained popularity among budget-minded gamers. Powered by an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor and equipped with 10GB GDDR6 memory, it offers support for all the latest Xbox games. However, the console’s 512GB storage capacity has become a concern as game sizes have increased over time.

To address this issue, Microsoft introduced a new Carbon Black model in 2023, providing users with double the storage capacity for just an additional $50. The console still supports external storage but requires proprietary external devices, which can be costly.

Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition from Sony mirrors the standard PS5 in terms of performance, featuring an eight-core up to 3.5GHz custom AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU, a 10.3 teraflops GPU, and 16GB GDDR6 RAM. Its sleek design with no disc drive provides a symmetrical appearance. The console comes with 825GB NVMe SSD storage, which may limit the number of games that can be stored at a given time.

One important aspect to consider when choosing between the Xbox Series S Black and the PS5 Digital Edition is the availability and pricing of games. Physical games often come with discounted prices and the option to trade them in or sell them second-hand.

The absence of a disc drive in both consoles means that gamers opting for the digital editions may miss out on these advantages. Digital titles on the PlayStation Store, for example, tend to be priced at full retail value, with few discounts available unless one waits for a sale. This can impact the overall cost of owning a PS5 Digital Edition.

In terms of storage, Microsoft’s new Carbon Black model of the Xbox Series S provides a welcome solution for gamers who require more space for their games. With double the storage capacity, users can store a larger number of games without the need for external storage. The original 512GB model of the Xbox Series S remains available at a lower price point for those who prioritize cost over storage capacity.
