Founded by Liang Wenfeng, the CEO of AI-driven hedge fund High-Flyer, DeepSeek operates with an open-source model, allowing developers to build on its technology. The startup’s R1 release, the first major version of its model, claims to deliver performance levels similar to OpenAI’s latest offerings, with the added advantage of lower operational costs.

When comparing DeepSeek to its most prominent competitors, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, there are significant distinctions in both performance and infrastructure.

While OpenAI and Google pour billions into developing ever-larger AI systems powered by state-of-the-art hardware from companies like Nvidia, DeepSeek’s breakthrough lies in achieving similar performance with far less resource consumption.
